introduction post!

hello, my name is medu! since i've been learning japanese for a while i thought "why not practicing by translating things from my favourite idol game?" so here i am.

we got an officially localized i-chu but it sadly only covers the main story, so i will share tls for affection stories, mini convos, skill lines, novels extracts, maybe some songs, etc etc.

i will be biased, especially for my first posts. translations are hard but i want to have fun lol and spread the ujrin word

however, i-chu isn't my only interest so i might drop contents from other media as well from time to time :)

i am a total amateur and do translations in my free time, no profit other than improving my language skills. keep this in mind when engaging with my posts. thank you

On Air - Introduction

On Air! (オンエア！) was a joseimuke mobile game about aspiring voice actors released by Coly, aka the developers of Mahoyaku/Promise of Wizard, Stand My Heroes and Break My Case. It was active from 2018-2020, and EOSed not long after its second anniversary. Ever since it released, On Air has been one of my favourite games of all time, and with the Switch port being released I want to try and renew some interest in it! (Do I recommend buying the Switch port? No we archived all the stories before the original game shut down so you should not pay money unless you're crazy like me. Do I think you should read the stories for free and love the characters? Yes!)

In On Air, you play as Amane Hikari, an honours student at Hoseki Gaoka (usually translated as Jewellery Hill School). There are 29 students and 1 teacher whose cards you can collect, divided into 6 units. The game has a jewel motif: as well as the school's name, each character has their own representative jewel. In accordance with it being a seiyuu-themed game, almost every part of OA was fully voiced. Every story, every mini interaction. You know how games like Bandori have those mini character interactions on the map? OA has 1578 of those, and every single one is voiced. They were kind of crazy for that.

OA had really charming characters and art - there's a reason part of the fandom is still around 4 years after EOS! The crowdfunding for the Switch port raised 10x the initial goal. That is how much people wanted this game back. Other than that it also had the funniest guy ever created: Aoyagi Mikado. I would like everybody to know about him.

I'm going to be using this blog to translate a whole bunch of things for the game - it's unlikely we'll ever see a sequel to the game or anything, but maybe if Western interest keeps up it'll randomly get an official English release months down the line like Ichu did?

about me

i'm a tsumugi, tasuku and sakyo oshi, so my translations and posts will be focused on them; by extension i'd also consider myself a fuyugumi hako oshi. i love everyone enough to sneak them all in this account at one point or another, though

i've been an a3 fan since the game's release in japan, but i've been playing it on-off for most of that duration until early this year (2024) (also my favs haven't changed at all in 7 years, so this might be telling you something about me as a person)

neither english nor japanese is my first language! if anything, my japanese is for the most part self-taught, and i translate (and post on this account) to learn and because i find it fun, so any corrections that slip past both me and my proofreader are absolutely welcome and encouraged

my only past public fantranslation experience is on the ichu wiki. i won't elaborate on this further unprompted, but you're free to start guessing on me

about my translations

i have absolutely no experience with a3's english server, and i don't plan to follow its terminology for anything, nor the way the characters speak; the only exception to that will be the torment doll, provided a story with it ends up in my hands

as mentioned before, my japanese is mostly self-taught, my translations tend to fluctuate between rough around the edges and loose localizations as close to the original text as possible, i can't guarantee the accuracy!

anything i find difficult to translate, and additional fun junk, will be at the end of posts under a NOTES section

this is where i take a moment to tell you guys about my best friend nam, she proofreads pretty much everything in this account before i post it, and she's pretty awesome. this account would look a lot sillier without her around

I HAVENT PLAYED IT IVE BEEN BUSY 💔💔💔 i just got spoiled a little bc japanese journalists are incapable of not spoiling in their articles i was just looking up reviews.......

everytime i try to hype myself up to click on the game so i can play it i get so excited that i get nauseous. so ill probably try to play it. when im feeling less excited abt it (maybe during summer)

director minetaka wants to get it localized but pqube is localizing ichu rn so after ichu is out if theres no news abt bustafe 2 i might force myself to play it with google translate 💔

I am not writing out that full title every time! Anyways, here��s the first “real” debut of winter 2021.

For some reason…this series reminds me of Pokemon. Probably how at the start, Ash tries to get along with Pikachu by doing all sorts of things like what Lloyd is doing here. (<- learnt protag’s name through synopses)

The name “Shouma” rang a bell and I was right – Shouma is voiced by Souma…Saito.

The Japanese title has “monogatari” on the end there…so it probably doesn’t fully translate into the English title.

These orange flecks in Lloyd’s eyes are kinda distracting…

Isn’t Kunlun in China, though…?

If this is just going to be Marie yelling…I don’t see why I should stay. (<- turned volume on for everything so far)

That fight scene’s not very good…

The missing princess is certainly going to be a plot point later.

Didn’t Lloyd say he sucked at combat…? Anyways, I’m not keeping this. The designs are colourful and the tiger was good, but it’s meant to be a comedy and it’s not funny.

The book appears to use English, albeit English so faintly inked in you can’t quite tell what language it is.

Alfred, governing Albert…? Isn’t that a bit redundant?

I swear all the female voices in this anime are squeaky as all get out…

All these high fantasy anime – or heck, any high fantasy series full stop – ever justify why the country is worth fighting for. It’s why I find war stories pointless and senseless.

This almost smacks of a game tutorial. The CGI is still there…it’s not as bad as other examples I’ve seen, but you can tell it’s CGI when you look at it.

However, Hokenshitsu no Shinigami has a very detailed artstyle…That’s why I’m pretty shocked Kemono Jihen has such a scratchy one…

Ever since this project was announced, I’ve been watching developments unfold on Anime News Network. I knew it would get an anime or something similar I could follow…and now here I am. I mentioned in the Sk8 comments I have basically zero knowledge of surfing, so…this is very unexpected, in one sense.

Here comes my past to haunt me…aside from me being a fan of BSD, I’m here because I influenced this series. How so? Once upon a time in the now-distant year of 2016, I was a scanlator for a brief period. Most of the work I’ve done hasn’t influenced the world at large, but this is the most influential manga I had a hand in working on.

Oh no! They’re starting with the dog AU?! (That comes from pretty far into the manga, IIRC. Further than my work was on it, at least.)

It’s Rashomon, but Rashoken (that last bit means “dog”). Hence Ruffshomon.

Basically, they just insert dog-related words everywhere…don’t make me explain every one!

Ouch, I can only imagine how much pain it was to translate Inu Shikkaku. Literally, it’s “No Longer a Dog”, but how would anyone make it in line with the other puns…?

I wasn’t fully aware of how the dog AU was connected to the main Wan series because I haven’t really looked at it after I quit due to aggregators, but…that was a nice fakeout. Also, I was concerned as to whether this was going to be a full-length ep or a short…seems like it’s a 10 minute short, so I have more chances of taking it.

I think they added a bit there. I remember Kunikida’s and Yosano’s were in the manga, but not the other members or Fukuzawa going “the wind is smiling” + Kenji working on the roof at the start.

Oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I remember Rampo. I think I had to approximate how he would say stuff with Pocky in his mouth, but Slug (current scanlator) went the extra mile and stuck food in his mouth to do the same panel.
